Notes on the measurements
- Head height is measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, including hair.
- The State Department's photo template places the eyes between 1⅛ and 1⅜ inches from the bottom of the photo.
- US visa photos use the same 2×2 inch size and the same head height as passport photos.
- For the DS-160 visa upload, the JPEG must also be 240 KB or smaller.
Other rules besides size
The background must be plain white or off-white, the photo must be taken within the last 6 months, and glasses are not allowed. A photo can be the right size and still be rejected for these.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the size of a US passport photo in inches?
2 × 2 inches, square. The head must measure 1 to 1⅜ inches from chin to top of head.
What is the US passport photo size in mm and cm?
51 × 51 mm, which is 5.1 × 5.1 cm. The head should measure 25 to 35 mm.
What is the US passport photo size in pixels?
Printed at 300 DPI, 2 × 2 inches equals 600 × 600 px. The DS-160 visa upload takes a square photo from 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 px; online passport renewal gives its own upload instructions.
Is the US visa photo size the same as the passport photo size?
Yes. Both are 2 × 2 inches with a 1 to 1⅜ inch head. The DS-160 upload also limits the JPEG to 240 KB.
Can I use a 35×45 mm photo for a US passport?
No. 35×45 mm is the size used by many other countries. US passports and visas need a square 2×2 inch (51×51 mm) photo.
Does the tool check the size for me?
The tool crops your photo to the 2×2 layout and exports it at 600 × 600 px, so you do not need to measure. It does not check other rules such as glasses or expression, so review the preview yourself.
